School at Sea

For the past twenty years teachers and students from all over the world have participated in this exciting and educational field trip, often referred to as "The West Coast Trip".

Students learning about Marine life.

The trip typically consists of up to forty-two students and four adult supervisors signing on as crew aboard the M.V. Edgewater Fortune. As part of this exciting maritime experience the students and teachers participate as ordinary seamen and ship officers aboard the vessel. Trips vary from four to five days through the Gulf and San Juan Islands off the West coast of British Columbia and Northern Washington State. Activities on board the ship include; basic seamanship, marine biology program, tidal studies, marine navigation and general marine knowledge.

Over the past twenty years, thousands of students have benefited from "The West Coast Trip". Many of the students and teachers who crewed with us over the years had never seen the ocean before, let alone travel on the sea. The captain and crew of the Fortune will teach everyone in a very short period of time the skills that they need to help operate a vessel of this size. Our goal is to make every trip one that both the students and the teachers will never forget and in all likelihood consider to be the highlight of their school years. We are proud to say that many of our "crew" have made successful career decisions after their maiden voyage aboard the Fortune.
